Community Mapping Through Islamic Art

MIAH hosted a special 3-day community arts project where, together, participants created an illuminated Ottoman-style map of Balsall Heath, inspired by traditional Islamic artistic practices, including geometric design, illumination, biomorphic patterns, decorative drawing, and Ottoman-style visual motifs.

This hands-on workshop used juggling to explore how people learn, how they get stuck and what happens when they get out of their own way. Most people walked into the room believing they couldn't juggle. Most people walked out having started the process. The gap between what they thought they could do and what they actually could is where the real work happened.

Residents of Link Road collected their thoughts on what they did to look after their mental health and turned them into a poem. Visitors were able to walk freely along the road at any time during Healing Arts Birmingham week and read the poem line-by-line in residents' front windows.
