Thursday 25th - Saturday 27th June 2026 MIAH Foundation, 496 Moseley Rd, Balsall Heath. Birmingham, West Midlands, B12 9AH
As part of Healing Arts Birmingham Week, MIAH hosted a special 3-day community arts project where, together, participants created an illuminated Ottoman-style map of Balsall Heath, inspired by traditional Islamic artistic practices, including geometric design, illumination, biomorphic patterns, decorative drawing, and Ottoman-style visual motifs.
Whether they had five minutes or an hour to spare, visitors were able to contribute to the map in a way that suited them. Participants were invited to identify places and spaces that were meaningful to them and add to the collective artwork in various ways.
The completed map became a lasting celebration of Balsall Heath's rich heritage and diverse communities. It was also intended to help inspire a future heritage trail for Balsall Heath and was displayed in the gallery as part of ongoing programming.
Visits also included free access to "Under the Sultan's Shadow", the exhibition exploring the artistic and cultural world of the Ottoman Empire.
